FileMaker’s Developer Conference (DevCon) 2010 has come and gone and when the dust cleared, the most significant product since FileMaker v7.0 was left for everyone to enjoy. That product is appropriately named FileMaker Go. This is not just an updated version of FileMaker Mobile which was discontinued a few years ago, but rather a mostly full functioning version of FileMaker on either your iPad or your iPhone device. The reason that I say mostly is that it won’t run plug-ins if you are using them. I spoke with Jesse Barnum of 360 Works and he indicated [...]

FileMaker takes human form…
by MarshallFlying back on the plane from San Diego after attending DevCon 2010, I’m struck by a revelation that isn’t going to be moderated in a panel or find its way into a group presentation. It certainly isn’t going to show up on a FileMaker Go! list and will never be demo’ed in the closing. My thought is as simple as this; I think that FileMaker CFO Bill Epling is a metaphor for everything that is FileMaker. Or he is a cyborg. Take your pick.
I met Mr. Epling for the first time at a FileMaker Platinum Partner lunch several years ago. I was immediately [...]

FileMaker Go – a Quick Review
July 23, 2010 by SameerJust a few days ago FileMaker released their newest version of FileMaker, running on the Mac OS mobile platform. Wittingly named FileMaker Go, this new version of the software shows excellent promise for mobile database access. With full screen, multiple windows, and multiple database access, FileMaker inc. has gone all out with this new version.
The first thing to note is FM Go’s price, which runs at $19.99 for the iPhone version and $39.99 for the iPad version. After completing the download and starting the application, we get a very nice looking home screen which contains files loaded on the device, [...]

Reintroducing the FileMaker Knowledge Base
March 8, 2010 by ChuckAn often overlooked tool in troubleshooting FileMaker issues is the FileMaker Knowledge base ( http://filemaker.custhelp.com ). The knowledge base is where FileMaker publishes articles for all known technical issues regarding its products, as well as some very useful how to articles such as Finding Duplicate Records, Formatting Phone Numbers or Performing a Silent Install
Along with the Knowledge Base, FileMaker also has its own forum ( http://forum-en.filemaker.com/ ) where FileMaker technical support and other experts will give advice on issues.
I encourage everyone who is attempting to troubleshoot a FileMaker issue to check out these resources first. A puzzling problem is often [...]

Reflections on a Global FileMaker Project
October 13, 2009 by ChuckThe extraordinary, devoted people of CURE International change the lives of children all over the world by providing them with medical care they would otherwise not have access to. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to assist their work with my talents as a FileMaker developer. In the last six months CURE volunteer Trevor Bunch and I have deployed CURE’s new Electronic Medical records to Hospital s in San Pedro Sula, Honduras and most recently Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Knowing that we would be facing any number of unanticipated challenges during deployments the system itself had to be designed, built [...]
